House #5's COLORBOND® steel Matt roof in the colour Monument®

When Kirsty and Jesse took out the room decider challenge and picked House #5 – the biggest on The Block this year, they knew that they had their work cut out for them.  Seasoned renovators themselves, the couple from country NSW have been buying and renovating properties together since they were 18 years old. Says Kirsty, “One of the big jobs we did before starting The Block is our current home which included a roof replacement. We used COLORBOND® steel and it makes such a difference to the look of the house and it’s also great finally having a roof that doesn’t leak every time it rains!”

Going into The Block, Kirsty and Jesse knew that they wanted to use the help and resources available to them to create their dream family home. “Our house is a stunning two-storey classic Hamptons style home. It has a sophisticated yet coastal feel. Living here will be like you are on a constant holiday!” laughed Kirsty.

Knowing that Hampton is such a family orientated area led the couple to build a floorplan and layout that catered for a big family or multi-generational living and includes four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a cinema, wine cellar spread across two-storeys.

The couple met with COLORBOND® steel Colour and Design Consultant, Ali Fenton, and The Block architect, Julian Brenchley to discuss colours for their roof which is a layered and intersecting series of distinct Dutch Gable forms. Kirsty and Jesse selected COLORBOND® steel Matt in the colour Monument® to go with their modern take on the Hamptons look that includes a narrow pan standing seam style profile – a contemporary take on a traditional corrugated profile.

Ali praised the couple’s decision, “The decision to combine COLORBOND® steel Matt in the colour Monument® with a standing seam style profile with low ribs allows the texture of the roof to become more subtle, adding to the grace of the overall design.”

Loving the COLORBOND® steel range of colours so much, Kirsty and Jesse chose to paint their weatherboards in a colour to match COLORBOND® steel Surfmist® to create a striking contrast between their façade and roof. Says Kirsty, “We wanted a classic white look for our external cladding with dark features that would pop against it. It also stands out against all the other houses in the street.”

Ali agreed and said that Kirsty and Jesse’s take on a black and white exterior palette, which can be hard to pull off, was elegant and tasteful. “A monochrome palette can shift attention to the smaller details, which is why the nuances like the standing seam style roofing profile rather than corrugated, plus the choice of COLORBOND® steel Matt worked so well on their home”.

Julian was also impressed with their selections, and really pleased with how consistent the couple was with their vision. “Kirsty and Jesse were so insistent with the Hampton’s look, and to have that COLORBOND® steel Monument® Matt in the standing seam profile was straight out of a textbook. It has a really understated elegance about it… it’s quite simple and understated in all of the right ways,” he praised.

Understanding that the Hamptons lifestyle is all about fresh air and relaxed coastal living, Kirsty continued with classic white walls through the interiors as well, though mixed it up with a variety of blue accent pieces and features to evoke sea moods. The couple also took cues from the subtle rhythmic lines of their roof cladding by repeating this texture through VJ panelling as a point of difference in living spaces. Ali applauded these choices - “Drawing from your unique surroundings and exterior palette is so important for the creation of seamless transitions, and it is that sense of effortless flow that will capture buyers’ hearts.”

Kirsty and Jesse’s elegant style has been a bit hit with the judges, and the couple won four rooms throughout the season. We can't wait to see how they go on auction day!
