Fencing FAQ's
I've heard that COLORBOND® steel should not be immersed in concrete. How will this affect my fence posts?
The fence posts of a fence made from COLORBOND® steel have a different metallic coating underneath the paint to that used in the rest of the fence, which mean they are suitable for concrete immersion. You should not allow the concrete to contact the rails or infill sheets of the fence as this can detrimentally affect the performance of COLORBOND® steel. For the design of concrete footings, we recommend contacting your chosen supplier of fencing made from COLORBOND® steel.
I can't find my fencing colour on the website, is it still possible to purchase it?
The COLORBOND® steel colours listed on our website show the core colours for our fencing range. Your fencing supplier may offer additional colours, and we recommend speaking with them for the availability of colours that may not be listed on our website.
Why is the fencing colour range different from the roofing colour range?
BlueScope constantly monitors colour and design trends, which informs updates to the COLORBOND® steel range, including the availability of specific colours for fencing applications versus roofing applications. If you find that your desired colour is not listed on our website, we recommend speaking with your fencing supplier as some suppliers may offer an extended COLORBOND® steel fencing colour range.
Can I buy a COLORBOND® steel fence that has a different colour on each side?
Generally not. The infill sheets, posts and rails made from COLORBOND® steel are the same colour on both sides. Infill sheets of different colours cannot be placed back-to-back, as the posts and rails are not designed for this.
The only way to achieve a different colour on one side of the fence is to paint it. Overpainting, however, will result in a surface which is not as durable as the original COLORBOND® steel paint finish. Painting the fence will also void any warranty on the infill sheets, posts and rails. What is the best way to maintain my roof / wall / fence made from COLORBOND® steel?
COLORBOND® steel requires minimal maintenance – the wash of natural rain water will help keep it looking good for many years. Areas not regularly washed by rain water, such as wall cladding under eaves, garage doors and the underside of eave gutters, should be hosed down at least every six months and more frequently in coastal areas. In cases where regular hosing does not remove all the dirt we recommend washing COLORBOND® steel with a mild solution of pure soap or non-abrasive dishwashing detergent in warm water. Washing should be done with a sponge, soft cloth or soft bristel nylon brush (no abrasive scourers, steel wool etc) and be performed gently to avoid scuffing. Thoroughly rinse the surface with fresh water immediately after to remove traces of detergent. My fence made from COLORBOND® steel has some patches of fading or lighter coloured paint, what is causing this discolouration?
A possible cause of this discoloration could be the application of touchup paints. Air-dried touchup paint weathers differently to that of oven-baked, prepainted COLORBOND® steel resulting in an irregular fading where these touch up paints have been applied.
