COLORBOND® steel and The Block Recap on Past Years
Nine years on The Block

There are lots of reasons why The Block has been one of the most watched shows in Australia for so many years, but one of them, for sure, is the amazing results the contestants manage to deliver, week after gruelling week, year after year! To celebrate nine years of inspiring COLORBOND® steel transformations on The Block, we look back on some of the most memorable seasons.

Whether you’re tuning in as a building or reno aficionado or simply for the drama, over the last 9 seasons, COLORBOND® steel has added to the beauty (and strength!) of these impressive properties. From the launch of a new finish to inspiring new colours, different house styles, roof pitches and colour schemes, over the years The Block has been showcasing the many ways COLORBOND® steel can enhance your home to inspire your build or reno.

Colour and Style

With over 22 colours to choose from, COLORBOND® steel has always been a great place to start when choosing your colour scheme. Excitingly, in 2017, COLORBOND® steel extended the palette in Australia with an exciting launch of a matt finish and if you were watching The Block you were one of the first to know. The Block that year featured a classic renovation of five weatherboard houses that had been transported to the site. And in the backyard of each, a huge garage was then added, with a value-adding extra living space upstairs. COLORBOND® steel was selected not just for the roofing, but also for the external walling too, with an elegant standing-seam style profile and further refined in a stunning matt finish giving the homes a modern appeal that we still see being used widely today – particularly in the ever-popular colour Monument®. COLORBOND® steel in a Matt finish was certainly popular over the years, featuring in seasons 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Popular Matt

In 2021, it was a quiet cul-de-sac in Hampton’s turn to host a memorable Fans V Faves edition of The Block. It put some old favourites up against keen newcomers and COLORBOND® steel played a big role grabbing attention. Once again, the popular matt finish reigned supreme - every contestant chose a COLORBOND® steel roof with a Matt finish. Ronnie and Georgia’s corner block was a real ”wow” moment, with COLORBOND® steel Surfmist® Matt on the roof, the wall cladding and even the garage door. The dark side was also well represented, with two Monument® Matt roofs and one in Basalt® Matt, all accented with Snaplock profiles that screamed style.

Unique Facades

2023 was the year ‘old and tired’ became ‘new and funky’, with five traditional brick houses getting extraordinary makeovers (and an extra upper level). New facades for each were at the heart of the exterior changes, and it was your first look at new colours in COLORBOND® steel’s palette. There was one clad top to toe in COLORBOND® steel’s crisp new Dover White™, bringing a fresh contrast to the roof which featured COLORBOND® steel in a Matt finish in the colour Monument®. Next door was a clever modern/retro twist, with cladding made from COLORBOND® steel in Monument® in a Matt finish, and a roof in the new Southerly® colour (an elegant and versatile cool grey with pale tones). House 5 that year also featured a new COLORBOND® steel colour for its exterior cladding, Bluegum® in a Matt finish - a relaxed grey with a calming mid tone it helped blend the existing brick and timber together, making what could have been a loud industrial design just a little bit softer and friendlier.

Butterfly Effect

The 2024 Block was on Victoria’s Philip Island, legendary home to holiday makers, penguins, and the occasional motorbike grand prix. It featured an extraordinary reimagining of some existing structures, with an old holiday park consisting of nine properties being magically transformed into five unique Block houses, each complete with beautiful roofs made from COLORBOND® steel. The “butterfly roofs” were a distinctive design on four of the five, dipping to a central line in the middle towering upwards at either end. Colours chosen went in a coastal direction, as you’d expect – Surfmist®, Southerly®, Dover White™ and Shale Grey™ (an easy way of achieving a coastal vibe, even when you’re not actually near one).

Daylesford

This year finds us in the historic town of Daylesford in regional Victoria, a place well-known for its wellness spas, mineral springs, restaurants and galleries. In a first for the Block, there’s not a renovation in sight - contestants will be building five brand new homes from scratch, each on a ¾ acre plot against a background of cedar trees and rolling hills. Make sure you’re watching The Block to see how COLORBOND® steel is used to create these impressive homes - it’s sure to be a showstopper.
